Smart Home Technology for Aging Adults

November 26, 2019|fsstechnologies

Alzheimer’s Awareness

Around 75% of seniors want to stay in their homes as they age, according to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), even if they need day-to-day assistance or have ongoing health issues like early-stage Alzheimer’s or dementia.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 5.8 million Americans are living with the disease, and by 2050 this number is projected to rise to nearly 14 million.

Alzheimer’s also impacts caregivers. More than 16 million Americans are providing unpaid care for someone who has Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases.

Today’s smart home technology, while offering a whole new level of convenience and ease to our lives, also can provide tremendous benefits to caregivers.

There are new wellness solutions available today that integrate with connected home security systems to provide caregivers with a wealth of knowledge about the health, wellbeing, and safety of their loved ones, including Alarm.com’s Wellness solution.

Unlike emergency pendants, which only alert caregivers or authorities after an incident has occurred, new technology monitors the quality of life through a suite of discreet activity sensors and smart devices installed throughout a home. The sensors use machine learning and predictive analytics to proactively alert caregivers to potential health issues detected in real-time activity data.

For example, smart sensors can be placed on doors, windows, cabinets, chairs, under bedsheets, and so on. These sensors then deliver reports about changes in activity levels, sleeping and eating patterns, bathroom visit frequency, medication adherence, as well as emergencies such as falling or leaving the house. All the information is available to caregivers via the Alarm.com app on their smartphone, and through real-time alerts.

In addition to the peace of mind, this offers to caregivers; loved ones benefit from the conveniences of smart home technology, such as voice-controlled thermostats and lighting, doorbell cameras, and intelligent locks.

FSS Technologies is proud to help make aging in place a reality for more families. As a provider of  Alarm.com solutions, our experienced technicians can work with you to design the right mix of home security devices and sensors to maximize home security and the safety and wellbeing of your loved ones.
