How Do Wireless Doorbells Work?

February 25, 2020|fsstechnologies

A doorbell is a pretty self-explanatory tool—you press the button outside, and a chime goes off inside, alerting the homeowner that someone is at the front door. Like everything else, though, today’s technology has brought even the humble doorbell into the limelight as an indispensable tool for convenience and security.

Pros and Cons of Wireless Doorbells

Wireless doorbell systems have no physical wiring connecting the doorbell button outside to the doorbell receiver or chime inside the house. Rather than electrical wiring, a wireless doorbell uses radio waves to transmit the signal.

Since you don’t have to worry about connecting electrical wiring properly, installing a wireless doorbell is ideal for renters who are not allowed to make significant modifications to their units. A wireless doorbell can also have multiple receiver units, which enables you to place the receivers in areas of the home where it is difficult to hear the doorbell ring, like basements and garages.

A wireless doorbell system can run on batteries, can be plugged into an electrical outlet, or can be connected to the primary electrical system. It is best to look for wireless doorbell buttons that are water-resistant and heat-resistant since they will be outside and exposed to the elements.

Since most of the cheaper wireless doorbells communicate with radio waves, interference issues can occur. Devices like two-way radios, police radios, cordless phones, garage door openers, and even a neighbor’s wireless doorbell could all interfere and cause your doorbell to go off at random times even if no one is pushing the button. Most wireless doorbell units feature the ability to choose from multiple frequencies to reduce interference.

Most of the higher-end wireless doorbell systems feature video streaming to an app. These systems communicate via Wi-Fi and will require a stable and secure Wi-Fi connection to work correctly.

Wireless Doorbell Features

A basic model wireless doorbell will ring a chime, but there are lots of other bells and whistles on today’s wireless doorbells.

Some wireless doorbells include plenty of additional features to make life easier. For those who may be hard of hearing, wireless doorbells can flash a bright light to alert the homeowner someone is at the door. Even more advanced, some wireless doorbells include live video and audio capabilities, allowing the homeowner to talk to and see the person at the front door.

And what if you aren’t home at all? Some wireless doorbells come with mobile apps. When someone presses the transmitter button on your wireless doorbell or if it detects motion outside your door, the app will notify you with an alert or email. This feature is excellent if you are expecting a package, see an unexpected visitor, or want additional reassurance while you’re out of town.

Do Your Homework Before Purchasing

Wireless doorbells can range anywhere from $20 to $200. There are many different brands of wireless doorbells that you can purchase. However, some brands are better than others, and some have more high-tech features than others, so be sure to do your research before purchasing to get the right fit for you.

If you are interested in installing a wireless doorbell at an apartment or rental property, be sure to check with building managers to get approval before purchase.
