What are the Best Outdoor Security Cameras?

October 8, 2020|fsstechnologies

When it comes to protecting your home, you need to think about both the indoor and outdoor components of your security system. Security cameras can allow you to see and monitor what is going on, even if you aren’t there in person.

Placing cameras outside to protect your home or business requires a bit more planning than putting them in a corner in your home. An outdoor security camera needs to be rated for weather, have low-light capabilities, and any of the streaming capabilities that are important to you.

Primary Considerations Before Purchasing Cameras

As with any security system, you will need to determine whether you want a wired or wireless system, since this will be a major factor in the technology used in your home. Wired and wireless cameras have different power sources and performance capabilities. Check out our blog on the subject for more details on these two options.

Outdoor Security Feature Considerations

Before you choose a security camera or commit to a specific security plan, consider which features are most important to you. Some capabilities to consider:

  • Resolution: How clear do you want the video to be? Is it important to catch details and movement, or do you want a general view of the front of your home?

  • Weather resistance: This camera is going to be outside, so consider the weather in your area. Does it need to be heat or cold resistant? Waterproof?  If you intend to place this camera outdoors, make sure it is rated for outdoor use. Outdoor cameras are made with more durable materials that can withstand weather or are housed in a casing to discourage someone from messing with the camera itself.

  • App integration: Do you want an app that allows you to monitor your security cameras from your phone or PC?

  • Low light and night vision: If you are concerned about intruders at night, make sure to find a camera that can record in low light conditions.  You will need to know if you want to have an infrared, external lighting, or other night vision options.

  • Storage and streaming: You will always want the ability to view your cameras live and have instant playback.  However, how much recorded storage will you need?  Do you want to view the last 24 hours or the last 24 days?
