Low-Crime Neighborhoods of Detroit

SafeWise released its rankings of Michigan’s 20 Safest Cities of 2021. On the 2021 list, 9 of the 20 cities are considered suburbs of Detroit. They include:

  • Gross Ile Township #3

  • Oakland Township #4

  • Huntington Woods #9

  • South Lyon #13

  • Addison Township #16

  • Highland Township #17

  • Rochester #18

  • Berkley #19

  • Brandon Township #20

Gross Ile Township #3

Oakland Township #4

Huntington Woods #9

South Lyon #13

Addison Township #16

Highland Township #17

Rochester #18

Berkley #19

Brandon Township #20

To be considered for SafeWise’s list, cities must report crime information through the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting program and have a population threshold greater than the median city population in each state. SafeWise isn’t the only rankings game in town, though, and it’s always wise to compare a couple of different sources.

Homesnacks gets a bit more granular with its rankings, highlighting some smaller areas of Detroit. Their top 10 include:

Indian Village

Downtown

North Rosedale Park

Midtown

University District

Belmont

Detroit Golf

Jefferies

Corktown

West Side Industrial

Homesnacks says it combines recent data from the Census, FBI, OpenStreet Maps, and dozens of other sources to help you understand what it’s like to live in different communities.

Rankings are all well and good; however, it’s important to remember that safety is a word that means different things to different people. Crime statistics are reported in varying ways and every ranking methodology is different.

If you want to get some of the most accurate data about crime statistics in Detroit, it’s probably best to contact someone in law enforcement.

You can visit the City of Detroit’s Crime Viewer app for more detailed information and real-time crime reports for specific areas and addresses. This tool is intended to help residents and guests visualize crime data and make informed decisions.
